Health & safety issues including
COSHH, MSDS and PDAS are of fundamental importance
when working with professional trade products. For
every product Syntema sell, all H&S information
is readily available, which can be easily sent via
E-mail, Fax or Snail mail.

COSHH (care of substances
hazardous to health)
Using chemicals or other hazardous
substances at work can put people’s health at
risk. So the law requires employers to control exposure
to hazardous substances to prevent ill health. Syntema
have all the necessary information on all the products
they sell to assist
the employer in their own COSHH assessment for their
own business - either in-house or in conjunction with
a COSHH assessor.

MSDS
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
is designed to provide both workers and emergency
personnel with the proper procedures for handling
or working with a particular substance. MSDS's include
information such as physical data (melting point,
boiling point, flash point etc.), toxicity, health
effects, first aid, reactivity, storage, disposal,
protective equipment, and spill/leak procedures. These
are of particular use if a spill or other accident
occurs or for COSHH assessments.

MSDS's
are meant for:
a. Employees who may be occupationally
exposed to a hazard at work.
b. Employers who need to know the proper methods
for storage etc.
c. Emergency responders such as fire fighters,
hazardous material crews, emergency medical
technicians, and emergency room personnel.
MSDS's are not meant for consumers. An MSDS
reflects the hazards of working with the material
in an occupational fashion. For example, an
MSDS for paint is not highly pertinent to someone
who uses a can of paint once a year, but is
extremely important to someone who does this
in a confined space 40 hours a week.

PDAS
A Product Data Application Sheet
(PDAS) is designed to provide both workers and emplorerswith
correct information regarding application of the product
including drying times, number of coats etc. They
are specific to application in contrast to a MSDS.
A PDAS is readily available upon request for all Syntema
products.

EPA
The aim of the Environment
Protection Act 1990 (EPA) is to reduce the amount
of VOC (volatile organic compounds) released into
the atmosphere. VOC’s contribute to depletion
of the ozone layer and global warming. Most solvent
based products are slowly been superceded by waterborne
coatings to restrict the amount of VOC’s released.
Syntema is pleased to advise on specific products
and their VOC content to help companies comply with
EPA leglislation. Higher transfer efficient application
equipment and higher solids or water borne products
are readily available to help compliance.
