Questions and Answers

Becker Acroma

If you have a question on the PyroLac range, please consult the list below, or use the enquiry form to contact us.

1. What is PyroLac PrO / PyroLac One?
PyroLac PrO is a fire retardant lacquer system which has been certified to maintain and upgrade to a Class 0 rating under BS 476 Part 6 Flame Propagation.
PyroLac One is a flame resistant lacquer which is certified to maintain and upgrade to a Class 1 rating under BS 476 Part 7 Surface Spread of Flame.
2. What does BS476 Part 7 / Part 6 mean?
BS 476 is a fire protection standard for wall panelling. BS 476 Part 7 Surface Spread of Flame refers to a test which assesses how widely the flames are able to spread. The highest certification rating for this is Class 1.

If Class 1 is achieved, the product can then be tested under BS 476 Part 6 Flame Propagation, which assesses how well the coating works on the substrate as an intumescent by producing bubbles of gas to extinguish the flames. The highest rating in this test is Class 0.

3. What can they be used on?
PyroLac PrO and PyroLac One are certified for use on new, uncoated wall panelling (under BS 476), but can also be used to offer fire protection on all other interior wood, including staircases, interior windows and doors, furniture and mouldings.

4. How can I be certain it will provide Class 0 or Class 1 on my substrate?
The BS476 Part 6 and Part 7 tests only apply to wall panelling, so you can only achieve Class 1 or Class 0 for wall panels. To be certain that the lacquer offers the rate of protection required, your substrate must be tested with the lacquer. This is the same for all lacquers, whoever the manufacturer.

5. Some products claim to offer Class 0 on all substrates. Can yours?
Both parts 6 & 7 assess whole system performance & a pass certificate is awarded based on the specific components used, including; lacquers (basecoats, stains, topcoats etc), veneer, adhesive and substrate.

If certification is required for a specific substrate, or if one of the system components is altered, the whole system MUST be tested. Without this, the lacquers can be used but they will be referred to as an uncertified system, offering a degree of flame resistance / retardancy. In the UK, and most of Europe, there is no cover-all certificate for all wood and board constructions.

6. An architect has specified Class 0 lacquer for a staircase – is this suitable?

Class 0 relates to BS 476 Part 6, which is a test for wall panelling. There is currently no test for any other interior wood substrate, or the lacquer itself. Our lacquer has been tested to reach Class 0 on previously uncoated veneered Class 0 mdf, with a flame resistant adhesive.

The product is suitable for use on staircases, however the Class 0 rating does not apply. In this example, it is referred to as a fire retardant system.

7. How are the products applied?
All products are applied by professional spray application.

8. What is the PyroLac PrO system?
PyroLac PrO consist of three products; a waterborne flame resistant basecoat, waterborne intumescent lacquer and a solvent-borne flame resistant lacquer. These three products combine to give a Class 0 rating under BS 476 Part 6.
Note: This classification is substrate dependent. Check with our technical service department for advice.

9. Why do I need a certificate of supply?
The certificate of supply confirms that the correct amount of product was purchased for the particular application. In a fire situation, the fire retardant could be critical in allowing people more time to escape the building, so it is vital that it is applied correctly.

10. What quantity is it available in?
All products are available in 5 litre tins, for ease of use.

11. Who is able to test?
There are only a few approved test houses in the UK. For further information, contact our technical service department.

12. What are the obligations to re-test?
There are no legal obligations to re-test. However, formulations are reviewed after 5 years and a recommendation to re-test after 10 years. Becker Acroma feels this is not sufficient and will re-test every year.
